As locals, we all have various opinions of Yankee Homecoming. Visitors rush to our gorgeous city, traffic comes to a crawl, and parking spaces are hard to come by. With all this said… This 9-day festival has so much to offer for all. Residents – leave your cars at home and enjoy a stroll to the various activities. Employees – once you get to work; leave your cars parked and get out for that lunch break, and take it all in or stay late and take in the city at night.
Some of my fondest memories as a child are when my father would take me to these events. It became a tradition to meet up with extended family, kick back and just have some fun. I continued this tradition with my children, and now grown; we still meet for some of our favorites.
So, take some time to see what is happening in your backyard. You may be surprised.
A few of my favorites:
Waterfront Concert Series: This event takes place at Waterfront Park with seven evenings of concerts. Families bring blankets, chairs, a picnic supper, or patronize local vendors and enjoy the entertainment on our beautiful waterfront.
Family Day at Maudslay State Park: Start off our Super Saturday with good family fun! Many local businesses, organizations, and non-profits take part in Family Day fun, offering free crafts, games, activities, and handouts. Sit down for some lunch and listen to the band playing on the main stage or watch one of the performances taking part throughout the park.
The Greek Food Festival: This annual event is famous for its delicious Lamb Shanks as well as Gyros, Moussaka, Chicken & Lamb Kabobs, Loucanico, Keftethes (meatballs), Spinach Pie, Pastichio, Greek Salad, Stuffed Grape Leaves, Fish "Plaki" (Friday only), and Greek Pastries. So grab your co-workers and enjoy.
Yankee Homecoming 10 Mile and 5K Road Races: This marks the 57th year which now has approximately 3,000 runners between the 2 races. Make it a family affair, run with your kids, challenge yourself to meet a personal goal, or sit on the sidelines of the course and cheer the runners as they pass by.
Sidewalk Sales: Enjoy old fashioned, outdoor (& indoor) shopping throughout downtown Newburyport, The Tannery Marketplace, and Port Plaza. A great opportunity to support our unique local merchants while shopping for some great deals. Grab your friends and start that holiday shopping.
Fireworks: Bring your blanket or chair, sit and relax, listen to the concert and get ready for the oohs and aahhhs. A spectacular fireworks display is being planned for your enjoyment. Come early and enjoy the evening! Want to help support this always beautiful display? Take a chance in the raffle and you could win a ski vacation or even some $$.
Parade: Celebrate the final event of Yankee Homecoming. The parade starts at three roads and continues down High street to Marlboro Street. There are bands, entertainment, floats, non-profit groups, and a collection for the Jimmy Fund.
