Inn Street
Inn Street in downtown Newburyport, one of the port’s earliest streets, was a narrow crowded little pathway full of small wooden buildings. In 1975, the Inn Street Mall was constructed as part of the Urban Renewal Program. The successful conversion was awarded a citation for design excellence by the Boston Society of Architects in 1984.

Today you can stroll in and out of the fine shops lining the historic brick path. There is everything from historical artwork and maps to women’s clothing and home décor. You will find interesting antiques and fine art, along with imported specialties.

Downtown
In nearby Market Square, residents burned tea in 1773 to protest British taxes. Today across from the Firehouse Center, the open space of the “Bullnose” welcomes strollers to the heart of the city. Market Square, along State Street, Pleasant Street, Merrimac Landing and adjoining side streets feature a variety of boutiques, banks, bookstores, import shops, salons, cafés and food shops. Enjoy ambling for constant surprises.

Horton’s Yard
Located on Merrimac Street as you enter downtown, Horton’s Yard is home to a full-service salon, a fine art gallery, lingerie boutique, fine cabinetry & furniture studio and more. From inside these shops you can enjoy the beautiful view of the Merrimack River.

The Atkinson Building

Perfectly situated between the main downtown area and the Tannery, the Atkinson Building on Water Street is home to a unique mix of clothing and gift shops.

The Tannery
A short walk up Water Street brings you to the Tannery, a restored complex of old leather mill buildings now housing a variety of stores. The Tannery houses a unique mix of shops, services and eateries. You will find salons, a bookstore, home décor and design, an art gallery, along with photography and nature lovers’ supplies, and much more.

The Business Circle
Located on Route One and Upper State Street, the area known as “the Business Circle” is a convenient stop for banking, a quick bite to eat, basic provisions and most of all the new Commuter Rail Station. The MBTA runs to Newburyport, which makes trips into Boston easy and cost effective. 

Port Plaza
Port Plaza is located on Storey Avenue and is home to banks, a AAA travel agency, a grocery store, a café, a shoe store and many other necessities.
