Tobin Eckian’s Artwork on Display at Carry Out Cafe Through July
Newton, NH-based artist, teacher and musician E. Tobin Eckian creates beautiful, ethereal collages using digital images, pencils and paints, which are highlighted in an exhibition called “Inner Landscapes and Exploring Eternity.” The paintings are on display through July at Carry Out Cafe, 155 State Street in Newburyport.
“I’ve long been a fan of Tobin’s art. It seems like a dream, with soft colors and animals and nature intermingled,” said Paula Simpson, Carry Out Café’s owner. “We’ve shown some of her pieces at the Cafe before, but are very happy to highlight her latest art in a solo exhibit.”
Eckian, who holds a B.S. degree in Art Therapy from Lesley College in Cambridge, started making crushed pigments and crayon encaustics at the side of a well in her driveway in Eastern Pennsylvania at the early age of 8 years old. She began painting at age 17 and moved to New England in 1980 after spending a few years in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Tobin (whose nickname means “To Be In”) was influenced by Slovakian oil painting from her paternal Grandmother, and still uses some her tools, pencils, and paint.
An underlying theme to her art, which is in several worldwide collections, is the beneficence of Nature. Describing her process, Eckian uses collage elements, which are digital prints of sketches she does. Three or more are glued to paper that has been glued to panel. She then hand colors the prints to connect them and finishes with acrylic paints.
“This process allows for happy occurrences in a free-form way. I get surprises as well as story lines,” Eckian explains. “I like utilizing cut-ups to develop personal narrative and let my imagination fly in the the landscapes that emerge. I am very connected to the spirit of nature and this shows in my paintings.”
