Love of Beauty: Plum Island and the Marshes” on Display at Carry Out Cafe through February

For the months of January and February, Carry Out Cafe & Catering’s gallery is showcasing artist Sally Foskett’s watercolor paintings of landscapes and seascapes in an exhibition entitled “Love of Beauty: Plum Island and the Marshes.” The public is invited to a special reception on Thursday, January 31 from 5:00PM – 7 :00PM at the cafe at 155 State Street in Newburyport to meet the artist, see the artwork and enjoy light refreshments. In addition, fellow artist Beverly Carter will join Foskett to show her ceramic work during the reception.

“The Great Marsh and the Parker River Wildlife Refuge is a never-ending gift,” said Foskett. “After years as a nature photographer, I’ve embraced the softness of watercolor painting to express the vulnerability of the world around us. Using this medium, I’m learning to use tonal differences and brushstrokes to capture the beauty and mystery of nature.”

Foskett moved to Newburyport 15 years ago with her husband after years of working in marketing for various organizations including WGBH, McGraw-Hill, Inc., and Data Resources, Inc. She graduated from Connecticut College and earned a Master’s in Business Administration from the Yale School of Management.

Her heart and passion for sharing nature’s splendor began early. Foskett’s father was a watercolorist. She developed her eye for design and composition as a photographer, joining the Parker River National Wildlife Photographic Society. To hone her talent, she has studied with Gary Tucker of the Kaji Aso Studio in Boston for four years. His work evokes the elegant simplicity of Japanese woodblock prints of nature.

She has traveled for art classes to such inspirational places as Santa Fe, Paris, and Florence, and applied what she learned elsewhere to her representations of local landscapes. She is a member of the watercolor interest group at the Newburyport Art Association.

“I love the soft colors and depth of her art,” said Paula Simpson, owner of Carry Out Cafe & Catering. “Winter is a great time to reflect and find beauty all around Newburyport. Sally has been a longtime customer, and I’m so happy that we can share her abundant talent,” she added.

The paintings on display at Carry Out Cafe through February are available for purchase. Please contact Julie Cook at julie@cookbowe.com or the artist directly at sfoskett@comcast.net.
