Fine artist Michael Guarino’s oil paintings are on display during January and February at Carry Out Cafe & Catering at 155 State Street in Newburyport. “A Walk Through Life” showcases rich portraits, landscapes, still life, and “snapshots” of people’s lives. The public is invited to an Artist Reception on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2020, from 5-7 p.m. at the cafe. The event is free and refreshments will be served.

“We are thrilled to host Michael’s art to start off our 2020 gallery series. He is a very talented artist that captures light like few others can,” said Paula Simpson, owner of Carry Out Cafe & Catering.

Born in Methuen, MA, Guarino stated his career at the young age of seven when he started studying graphite and charcoal portraiture with Guy Pennisi of Lawrence, MA. During his time as a corporate chef in such storied institutions as the Bay Tower Room, Locke Ober and the Harvard Club, he was on chef Michael Schlow’s team, when Food and Wine magazine named Schlow one of the Top 50 Chefs. However, art called to him, so he retired a little early in life to fully embrace his passion. Guarino spent three years studying at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy, where he honed his skills learning traditional Renaissance techniques in the style of the old masters. He has private studied with several renowned artists throughout the U.S., including Daniel Gerhartz, Sam Vokey, as well as the Academy of Realist Art in Boston. In 2018, he won Best of Show at the Buttonwoods Museum in Haverhill, MA.

He prefers to work from life and enjoys drawing and painting a variety of subject matter. Guarino has completed many commissioned portraits including those of the U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch, country music legend Kenny Chesney, the “Godfather of Soul” James Brown (for his wife Tomi Rae), and American musician Paul Stanley, the rhythm guitarist and co-lead vocalist of the rock band Kiss. He welcomes commissions, but also enjoys capturing scenes from life and his travels in between the portraiture.

While staying active with competitions, exhibitions and workshops nationally, Guarino has been a member of the Art Association of Nantucket, the Arts League of Lowell, Greater Haverhill Art Association, Andover Art Association, Marblehead Arts Association, the Newburyport Art Association and Portrait Society of America. His work can be seen at the Sheldon Gallery in Newport, RI and The Landmark Gallery in Kennebunkport, ME. He holds classes in the region and is planning his 2020 workshops. Please visit his website at https://mguarino-art.com/ for the latest info.
