Please join us at the Newburyport Public Library during the month of June for the following programs!

Wednesday, June 5th at 7:00 pm: SpeakOUT: The LGBTQ+ experience. Two speakers who identify as LGBTQ+ will be talking about their personal experiences. SpeakOUT’s mission is to create a world free of homo-bi-transphobia and other forms of prejudice . They engage audiences in honest dialogue, and in keeping with their motto “Ask Us Anything,” invite any questions that may challenge harmful stereotypes and misconceptions.

Thursday, June 6th at 7:00 pm: LGBTQ+ Representation in Hollywood Films.  In advance of our Pride Film week, film expert Frank Mandosa will be discussing the ways in which the evolution of LGBTQ+ representation in Hollywood films reflects attitudes, both past and present, towards the LGBTQ+ community. Behind-the-scenes information, discussions about groundbreaking actors, and film clips and trailers all combine to bring you a fascinating, informative and enlightening look at the movie industry’s past and present history on the subject.

Tuesday, June  12th at 7:00 pm: Our Boy: Newburyport’s First WWI Casualty Finds His Way Home. Join local historian Bethany Groff Dorau for a presentation on the life of Eben Bradbury, a Newburyport native killed in WWI.

June 17-June 21st at 2:30 pm: Pride Films. Each day this week at 2:30 we will be showing a film which highlights some aspect of the LGBTQ+ experience. Please check our website or call 978-465-4428 x242 for movie titles.

June 17th at 6:30 pm: LGBTQ+ film in collaboration with the Human Right’s Commission. We will be partnering with the Newburyport Human Rights Commission to show a film about the LGBTQ+ experience in Hollywood.  Please check our website or call 978-465-4428 x242 for the movie title.

Saturday, June 22nd at 3:00 pm: Powow River Poets Reading Series. Join us for an afternoon of poetry with the Powow River Poets! The poets reading this month are Joan Kimball and John Foy. Readings are free, accessible, and open to the public. Come early to sign up for open mic!

Book Groups:

Wednesday, June 12th at 2:00 pm: Retired Readers at the Senior Center. Retired Readers meets on the second Wednesday of each month at the Senior Center. This month we will be discussing “A Prayer for Owen Meany” by John Irving.

Thursday, June 13th at 7:00 pm: Novel Ideas: NPL’s fiction book group. This month we will be discussing ” She Would Be King” by Wayetu Moore.

Wednesday, June 19th at 7:00 pm: Literary InQueeries: NPL’s LGBTQ+ Book Group for Everyone. All are welcome to this group, where we will read and discuss books with LGBTQ+ themes. We meet on the third Wednesday of the month at Commune (located at 33 Pleasant Street in Newburyport). This month we will be discussing “Real Queer America: LGBT Stories from Red States” by Samantha Allen. Please note that though this book group meets at Commune, it is run by the Library.

Tuesday, June 25th at 7:00 pm: Just the Facts: NPL’s nonfiction book group. This month we will be discussing “The Forger’s Spell” by Edward Dolnick.

Wednesdays at 2:30 pm: Movie Matinee. Did you know that the Newburyport Public Library offers weekly movie showings? Join us for movie matinee every Wednesday at 2:30pm. We show some of the newest films available as soon as they are released on DVD. Titles for January are on our website now.
