Local Boutique Hotel Joins the Ranks of the Ascend Hotel Collection

Newburyport’s Own Essex Street Inn & Suites Recognized as ‘Historic, Boutique, and One of a Kind’

Newburyport, MA: Newburyport’s own historic boutique hotel, the Essex Street Inn & Suites, is now a part of the Ascend Hotel Collection by Choice Hotels.

The Ascend Collection is an elite group of properties known for being “historic, boutique and one of a kind.” They are self-described as being “woven into the culture and fabric of their communities, featuring art and amenities that put local flavor first.”

This is certainly true of Essex Street Inn & Suites. This 37-room hotel has been a fixture in Downtown Newburyport for over 75 years.

“Our team is very excited and pleased to have been chosen to be a member of the Ascend Collection by Choice Hotels International,” said John Guertin, owner of the Inn. “We are proud to have served over 7,500 satisfied guests last year from around the world at the Essex Street Inn.” Guertin and his staff are looking forward to increasing this number in 2020.

These changes also include an expanded rewards program for hotel guests. As part of the Choice Rewards program, each stay at the Essex Street Inn & Suites will earn points toward free nights at more than 6,500 member properties in more than 40 countries. Familiar brands within the Choice family of hotels include Ascend, Cambria, Comfort Inn, Sleep Inn, Quality Inn, Suburban, Clarion, Econolodge, and Rodeway. 

About Essex Street Inn & Suites: The location of the Essex Street Inn & Suites was originally known as the “Lucky Livery Stable.” It was constructed in the early 1800s but burned during the Great Fire of 1811, which leveled much of Downtown Newburyport. 

The property changed hands numerous times, and in 1880, the stable was razed to make way for an Inn of “Victorian eclectic” style.

The three buildings that now constitute the Essex Street Inn & Suites were acquired by the Guertin family in the early 2000s. Other hotels in the New England Hospitality family of properties include the Royalty Inn in Gorham, New Hamshire; the Valley Inn in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire; Quality Inn and Suites of South Portland, Maine; and the Fireside Inn in Auburn, Maine.
