By Julie Wilmot, Intern

Recently, I visited Jim Barbere, the owner of Jim Barbere Photography. Below is the interview for the Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce’s #portpeople campaign which is a weekly profile of members of the Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce & Industry!

Julie: When did you start your photography business?

Jim: I’ve been in business a little over 4 years now.

Julie: What inspired you to be a photographer?

Jim: I’ve always loved art and had a deep appreciation for photography.  I took a lot of art classes in high school and college and although I majored in business and I’ve always had that creative itch.  I started out as a second shooter for a couple wedding photographers about 10 years ago and got hooked by the creativity and energy of the day…the rest, as they say, is history.

Julie: What is your favorite thing to photograph/ What types of photography do you do?

Jim: This is a tough question to answer as I enjoy photographing many different things. I tend to spend the bulk of my time focusing on weddings/events, head shots, and real estate but also enjoy working with high school seniors, families and corporate lifestyle/branding projects.

Julie: Are there challenges that you never expected?

Jim: Challenges…everyday!  Being a solo-prenuer has its rewards but many challenges as well.   I have a lot of balls in the air on a daily basis. I’ll have to get back to you when I have it all figured out 😉

Julie: What sets you apart from other local photographers?

Jim: There are a lot of talented photographers in our area each with their own style and personality – I’m all about having a good time doing what I love and client satisfaction.  I also love to mentor and teach, all of my clients get a little photography lesson when we work together!

Julie: What would you like Newburyport to know about you and your business?

Jim: Jim Barbere Photography is here as an option for your photography needs.  If it’s something I don’t specialize in I’m happy to refer you to someone in my network of talented folks.  I am so grateful to do what I am passionate about.   I also love to network with other business owners and creatives – let’s grab a coffee!
