Summer in Newburyport Blog: History is Alive and Well in Newburyport!

One of the coolest parts of Newburyport is its history.

No world-changing events occurred in our streets, but some really cool ‘Did you know?’ things did. Local Historian, Ghlee Woodworth, followed in her father’s footsteps and has created the go-to guide for Newburyport history buffs.

Boston’s North End may have the Freedom Trail, but Newburyport has the Clipper Heritage Trail. Ghlee’s mission was (and continues to be) to bring local history to life. She researched and created a trail complete with a website, mobile website, guided maps (available at City Hall and the Chamber of Commerce office) and historical markers. These markers are engraved granite blocks with ‘Clipper Heritage Trail’ and can be found throughout town. A quick glance at your map will explain what historical occurrence happened there.

The maps are separated by sections of town. You can view the complete list of tours by visiting the ‘Tours’ page on the website.

The Chamber of Commerce greatly appreciates our history and the work Ghlee is doing to keep history alive. We also appreciate the local businesses and organizations that are helping to create the future of Newburyport!
